Why Your ITC Never Matches GSTR-2B (And How to Close the Gap)
Your purchase register says you can claim ₹4.2 lakh of input tax credit this month. GSTR-2B says ₹3.6 lakh. Until you know where the ₹60,000 went, you cannot file 3B with a straight face.
What GSTR-2B is, and why not 2A
GSTR-2B is an auto-drafted statement of the credit available to you, built from what your suppliers filed. It is generated once for each month, on the 14th of the following month, and then it does not change.
That last part is the whole point. GSTR-2A keeps moving as suppliers file late, so a reconciliation against it is out of date the moment you finish it. 2B is frozen, which is what makes it something you can actually tie your books to.
Every line lands in one of four buckets
| Bucket | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Matched | Same supplier, same invoice, figures agree. | Claim it. This is the credit you are safe on. |
| Mismatched | Found on both sides, but the taxable value, tax or date disagrees. | Check which side is wrong before claiming. Often it is your own entry. |
| In 2B, not in books | The supplier reported an invoice you never recorded. | Find the bill. Either it was missed, or it is not yours. |
| In books, not in 2B | You recorded a purchase the portal has never heard of. | The dangerous one. You cannot claim this until it appears. |
Where the difference actually comes from
Ranked by how often each one turns out to be the answer:
- 1.The supplier filed in a later period. Not lost, just deferred — the invoice surfaces in a subsequent 2B and the credit is claimable then.
- 2.The invoice number is written differently. SI/2026-27/0041 in their return, SI-2026-27-41 in your books. Sally matches on the core of the number rather than the exact string, so formatting alone will not break a match.
- 3.Rounding. A rupee or two between their figure and yours. Sally allows a ₹1 tolerance before calling something a mismatch, so genuine rounding does not generate noise you have to wade through.
- 4.The wrong GSTIN. They billed your Maharashtra registration and you booked it under Delhi, or a character was mistyped. The credit is sitting in someone else's 2B.
- 5.The supplier is on QRMP. Quarterly filers land in your 2B on their own cycle, so a monthly comparison looks short for two months out of every three.
Two deadlines decide whether you keep the credit
A mismatch you never resolve stops being a reconciliation problem and becomes a cost. Two clocks run against you:
- •Section 16(4) — credit for a financial year has to be claimed by 30 November of the following year, or the date you file that year's annual return, whichever comes first.
- •The 180-day rule — if you have not paid the supplier within 180 days of the invoice date, credit already taken has to be reversed. You can take it again once you pay.
Common questions
Can I claim credit that is in my books but not in 2B?
No. The 5% provisional cushion Rule 36(4) used to allow was withdrawn from 1 January 2022. What is not in 2B is not claimable, however good your paperwork is.
The supplier insists they filed. What do I ask them?
Two things: which return period, and which of your GSTINs they billed. One of those is almost always the answer.
Do I have to download the JSON every month?
Only if you want to. With a connected GSTIN, Sally fetches 2B from the portal directly; the manual JSON upload exists for when you would rather not connect.
What about purchases where I paid tax under reverse charge?
RCM credit does not depend on your supplier filing, so it is tracked separately and will not show up as a missing 2B line.
