Sally

GSTIN verification

Paste a GST number and see whether it holds up — format, check digit, state and the PAN inside it. Runs in your browser, so nothing you type leaves this page.

Verifying a lot of these? Sally validates every party's GSTIN as you invoice them, and flags mismatches before they reach your GSTR-1.

Questions

What does a GSTIN actually contain?

Fifteen characters. The first two are the state code, the next ten are the PAN of the business, the thirteenth shows which registration this is for that PAN within that state, the fourteenth is normally Z, and the fifteenth is a check character calculated from the other fourteen.

What does this tool check?

The structure. It confirms the length and pattern, that the state code is one GST actually issues, and that the check character agrees with the other fourteen — which is what catches a mistyped digit. It runs entirely in your browser; the number you type is never sent anywhere.

Does a valid result mean the business is registered today?

No, and this is the important limit. A structurally valid GSTIN can belong to a registration that was cancelled or suspended. Before you claim input tax credit against a supplier, check their current status on the GST portal or through a GSP-connected system.

Why does the check digit matter?

Because a single wrong character in a customer GSTIN flows into your GSTR-1, fails validation at the portal, and has to be amended. Catching it at the point of entry is far cheaper than fixing a filed return.

Stop checking these by hand

Sally validates every party's GSTIN when you save them and again when you invoice, so a bad number never reaches your GSTR-1.
